Week of October 24th:
This has been a busy week with district testing for math and Red Ribbon Week. We also had our October celebration day today and Luis' mom brought in cupcakes for the class! His birthday was earlier this month on the 6th and Jayden's was on the 22nd. Our PBIS social skill of the week was "accepting no for an answer".The students have learned that includes looking at the person speaking, saying "okay", staying calm, and asking questions later if you disagree. Last week, we finished our unit 3 test in math on the topic of comparing lengths. This week, we began unit 4: exploring quantities to 99. We got to practice counting, writing, and exploring quantities through 99 by ones by thinking about and investigating a bake sale. It was fun to think about counting cookies when we have baked with our families. Next week, we will work on being more fluent in these skills. In writing, we are working on comparing. We read and discussed the book Stellaluna and compared two animals from the book:bats and birds. We will continue to extend this investigation next week. In comprehension, we investigated an informative article called,"Chicks and Chickens". We were able to keep with the theme of comparing by creating a double bubble map to compare adult chickens (hens and roosters) to baby chicks. We also picked out interesting or unknown vocabulary from the text. During enrichment time (art), we began learning about Dia de los Muertos. With that information, we began creating our own sugar skull masks (on paper, of course). We also studied location and mapping in social studies. This included looking at Google Map sand discussing the map of our school and the area around the school. In science, we continued investigating the concepts of transparent, translucent, and opaque. What a busy week! Take a deep breath and have a relaxing weekend! P.S. Parent/conference meeting notices will be going home next week.

Week of October 10th:
I hope all students had a relaxing 2 days off this week! Our regular homework packets will resume next week. In Language Arts this week, we continued investigating the informational article titled, How Are Animals Like and Not Like Their Parents?" We were able to use our brace map that we created last week (showing details and main idea) to generate questions about the text on a detail/question chart. We also had to compare the different animals described in the text. In grammar, we continued to work on using periods, question marks, and exclamation points appropriately. We finished our punctuation foldables and were able to sort and classify sentences into those three categories. In addition we always practice our fluency routines weekly: phoneme segmentation, sound spelling and word blending, word recognition, and reading fluency using the passages given to us in our weekly homework. In math, we continued to work on the concept of indirect comparisons of object attributes. We need to be able to organize, represent, and interpret data as demonstrated by classifying objects and counting on to add and subtract. The skill we specifically worked on this week was comparing lengths of objects directly and indirectly to understand that if object A is longer than object B, and object B is longer than object C, then object A is longer than object C. We also began a reader's theater on Christopher Columbus and why Monday was a significant holiday in history. Next week, 1st grade will be creating a dedication video for the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, along with the rest of the school. In preparation for filming, we created props and practiced our lines for the video. We also wrote letters and drew pictures describing the job of a police officer and had discussion about what they do for our community. The PBIS Social Skill of the week was "Participating in Activities". This means that we appropriately request to be part of an activity, cooperate with others in the group, such as allowing others to take their turns, use a pleasant voice when talking to others, and remember to accept losing or winning appropriately. Have a great weekend! Miss Joiner learningwithmissjoiner.weebly.com Room 5 welcomes you to October! Happy Fall-idays!
Week of October 3rd: In math this week, we started our new unit on Ordering and Comparing Lengths. We have compared length directly while understanding the importance of aligning endpoints, compared lengths of objects, and just started (but have not yet finished)understanding indirect comparisons of object attributes (AKA.using length with ideas that are not objects). In grammar, we have been working on punctuation: using periods, question marks, and exclamation points. In comprehension, we began studying informational texts. This week, we focused on an article called, "How Are Animals Like and Not Like Their Parents?". We were able to study important vocabulary from the article and use a brace map to find out the main idea of the text by investigating important details. The PBIS Social Skill of the week is how to deal with frustration. We must identify feelings of frustrations as they arise, determine the source of these feelings, breathe deeply and relax when frustrations arise, discuss frustrations with a caring adult or peer, and find alternative activities that promote feelings of success. The students know this process as the steps to problem solving: 1)Think about it. 2) Choose a plan. 3) Carry out your plan. 4) Check your answer. Lastly, this is a reminder that there will be no school for students on Monday and Tuesday due to teacher inservice work days. There will also not be a homework packet due next week because of the short week. Instead, letters will be sent home about DreamBox and Lexia to give students the opportunity to practice their computer programs at home. Keep reading and enjoy the time with family! Week of September 19th:
In comprehension this week, we begin investigating the story The Wizard of Oz. In grammar, we began learning about adjectives and that adjectives are describing words. In writing, we had to work hard on our first district writing task of the school year. The prompt asked us to write an opinion piece about which pig (from The Three Little Pigs) we think is the wisest. We had to include topic and conclusion sentences, as well as 3 details to support our opinion. We were able to use our previous knowledge from studying The Three Little Pigs in our lessons earlier this school year. In reading, we began taking tests on the books we have read from the library on Accelerated Reader. In math we continued working on unit 2, which is using data to add and subtract. We specifically focused on using the strategy of counting on to subtract. We will be finishing up unit 2 and taking the summative assessment next week. The PBIS social skill of the week was disagreeing appropriately. Week of September 12th:
In comprehension, we focused on investigating the story Jack and the Beanstalk. We studied the characters, settings, and major events as well as identified challenging or interesting vocabulary from the story. In grammar, we learned all about verbs and how a verb is an action. We got to use our knowledge of nouns from last week and compare them to verbs by classifying words and doing a noun/verb sort. In writing, we are continuing to work on opinion writing to prepare us for the district writing task we will be completing next week. In order to practice, we studied a book called Eat The Alphabet and wrote about what our favorite food was. We had to create a flow map with 3 supporting details for our choice, which included a topic and a closing sentence (see map in picture). In math, we continued working on unit 2, which is Using Data to Add and Subtract to 20. The skills we specifically worked on this week were interpreting visual representations; organizing, interpreting, and representing a data set; organizing data into a set by counting on; and counting on to add. We always need to remind ourselves that in the counting on strategy, we start with the bigger number. Our PBIS social skill of the week was cooperating with others. This is important both inside the classroom, outside at recess, or anywhere on campus. Week of September 5th:
I hope everyone had a wonderful day off for Labor Day! Our PBIS social skill this week was following instructions/directions. We learned that when you are asked to follow instructions, you look at the person talking, say "okay", do what you've been asked right away, and check back with the person who asked you. In Language Arts this week we worked on comprehension, grammar, and writing. In comprehension, we studied the story Hansel and Gretel by picking out important vocabulary words, completing a character, setting, and major events chart, and creating character and setting bubble maps. In grammar, we have been working on common nouns and understand that nouns can be a person, place, or thing. We got to practice classifying different nouns into the appropriate categories. In writing, we worked on opinion writing. After reading The Three Little Pigs last week, we answered the question: which pig was the wisest? We had to provide evidence to support our opinion. In math, we worked on our new unit, which is all about using data to add and subtract to 20. We specifically organized, collected, and represented different data. For example, today we used the topic of our favorite pets to create and interpret a visual representation of which students in room 5 like better: cats or dogs. Tomorrow we will have volunteers from Desert Springs Middle School come work with our 1st graders for 1 hour in the afternoon! Week of August 29th:
We have been investigating the story of The Three Little Pigs. On Monday we read and watched the story and identified and defined words in the story that we found difficult or were not sure of. On Tuesday, we created a character, setting, major events chart about the story. On Wednesday, we created a bubble map to describe one character and one setting. On Thursday, we created a flow map to show the sequence of major events in the story. Today, we completed a 5w chart, asking who, what, when, where, and why questions about the story. Next week, we will be investigating Hansel and Gretel! In math, we completed our first unit about understanding how ten ones make a ten. We took our unit 1 assessment today to see what we have learned over the past 3 weeks. Next week, we will be starting unit 2: Using data to add and subtract to 20. Our positive behavior social skill of the week was "completing atask". The book fair was this week and we had so much fun in library with Ms. Lynn! In Language Arts this week, our writing assignment asked us to brainstorm and make opinions about what we can do for others and nice things we can say to others to "fill their buckets". We learned that if we follow these rules, we will stay happy and our own buckets will stay full! In phonics, we learned about the sounds/a/, /m/, /p/, /s/, and /t/ but focused mostly on the short /a/ sound. We saw this sound in our spelling words for this week and even took a dictation test on them! The stories Pam and Sam and NatCan Jump helped us practice these sounds more fluently and work on our comparing/contrasting and comprehension.
In math, we continued to work with bundles of ten but we began addition as well. We learned the definition of teen numbers and used ten frames as a strategy to add teen numbers together. We also began working on the concept of taking away for subtraction too. Similar to the bucket fillers, the Bully Free Classroom concept we worked on this week was saying positive comments to others. When we say positive things, others feel happy. When we all feel happy, we are better able to do our work and have the ability to work in groups and independently. We are not able to do our best work when we are upset. Can't wait for next week! In math this week, we had to make bundles of ten and understand that ten ones are just one group of ten. To practice making bundles of ten, each table had to work together to sort through cards with "cupcakes" on them and create a box of 10. The above picture is an example of one table's bundle. To continue practicing tens, tables had to work together to investigate a number card and decide how many more are needed to make a bundle using that number.
In Language Arts, we made tree maps (a thinking map) to brainstorm what is special about us. We learned so many amazing things about our classmates! We focused on two categories: ourselves and our families. When our tree maps were finished, we created an " All About Me" foldable book. We could make our book about ourselves or our family. These activities are helping to prepare us for the unit 1 theme in Treasures (Language Arts curriculum), "What Makes You Special?". Parents: See our Room 5 Class Dojo stories for more pictures! The first week of school was great! We got to read Pete The Cat Rocking In My School Shoes. He helped us brainstorm how we felt on the first day of school. We will finish next week, but at least we got to color our own shoes that we rocked for the first week of school! We also started reading about Bono The Monkey and what his behavior was like in school. Lastly, it was fun to learn about our classmates and what we had in common.
