Be teachable and always keep learning!
Classroom News - May and June 2021
Our end-of-the-year party for students who complete their independent work for the next 4 weeks, will be on Wednesday, June 2nd on Zoom! See the invitation and details posted on Class Dojo story. Only students who have done their week for at least 3 of the 4 weeks will be invited to attend. A goodie bag for the party will be sent home the week before. I can't wait and would love the entire class to be there, so help encourage your child to complete their work every day and stay focused in class.
It is that time of year for our ABC countdown! See the information posted in Class Dojo for how your child can participate each day!
This is a friendly reminder that good behavior and Zoom etiquette are still expected for Distance Learning activities.
Students should have a quiet place to work. Students should not be leaving the camera during class time (except to use the restroom and for scheduled breaks), walking around the house, playing with siblings, etc. Students should be signing in on time to whole group sessions on their scheduled days, as well as after the timer goes off after recess. They also need to be muted until called on or told to turn sound on. Students are expected to have all distance learning materials with them and be prepared to have them out and use during class. Every student is also expected to participate and engage in the lesson: answer if called on, hold up completed work to the camera screen, participate by writing into the chat, show answers on their whiteboard or number rack, etc. The same behavior that is expected in person is expected virtually. Most students are doing great in this area but there are a couple of students who still do not participate or follow the Zoom rules. If this is something I have sent you a message about, please have a conversation with your child and I will be happy to help in any way I can.
It is important that we are working together during hybrid to create a successful learning experience for your child. This is new to all of us but if we keep communication and our minds open, we can do anything together!
Parents of Distance Learners - If you have not picked up your child's newest packet of distance learning materials for May, please do so ASAP! We will begin using these materials this week.
Class Dojo will be my main source of communication with you, the families! It is important that you AND your child have accounts with Dojo. The student accounts allow your child to complete their portfolio assignments. They will also be earning points for the work they complete, as well as their behavior during live sessions. There will be prizes and rewards based on these points (group, whole class, and individual) throughout the school year. The parent account is where I will be communicating with you daily, sharing what is going on in our classroom, creating events and reminders, and you will be able to see and interact with your child's work. You will also be able to see daily/weekly/monthly behavior reports for your child with how many positive points they have each month. Download the Class Dojo app on your phone and enable the notifications and please remember to be active on it daily. CHECK YOUR CLASS DOJO MESSAGES DAILY. You can also connect with Seesaw to see and monitor your child's work there as well. If you need to me to re-send you an invite to either, let me know.
Seesaw will be used as a place where students will complete work and create digital portfolios, similar to the Dojo portfolios but this will be where the bulk of our work is submitted. Students can automatically connect to their student account through the Clever portal but you can also create a parent account to see all their work.
Clever brings all your child's applications and programs into one secure portal and provides a single sign-in for every student in the district. I will also post announcements on "Mrs. Patel's Page" and track your child's time on the necessary programs weekly.
Other programs your child will use, that can all be accessed through Clever are: Imagine Math, Imagine Literacy, Accelerated Reader, NewsELA, Lexia, Dreambox, Mystery Science, RazPlus (Reading A to Z), Epic, and more. If you have questions about any of these programs, or Class dojo, Seesaw, and Clever, let me know. I am here to help!

Tips For Parents During Distance Learning
1. Encourage your child to explore topics and projects they are excited about.
Now more than ever, it is important to find ways we can keep the children engaged and excited about learning. If there is a topic or project that grabs your child's interest, encourage them to keep exploring it. That is why it is so important for me to know your child's likes, hobbies, and interests.
2. Relate to the lesson.
Whether it is something that is a part of your job, or a subject you also struggled with, finding ways to relate to what your child is doing can be helpful for you both.
3. Ask for help when you need it.
If there is a subject or lesson that you are having a difficult time understanding or explaining to your child, don't be afraid to ask for help.
4. Be kind to yourself.
This is a difficult time for everyone. It can be extremely difficult to balance work while also trying to keep your child on track with school. It's okay if you don't know everything or if you are feeling overwhelmed.
5. Know who is here to help.
Whether it is your child's teacher, another school staff member, or another parent, there are a ton of people working to make sure you and your child have the resources you need to be successful with online learning.
Give yourself and your child's teacher grace! We are in this together!
