Room 5 welcomes you to October! Happy Fall-idays!
Week of October 3rd: In math this week, we started our new unit on Ordering and Comparing Lengths. We have compared length directly while understanding the importance of aligning endpoints, compared lengths of objects, and just started (but have not yet finished)understanding indirect comparisons of object attributes (AKA.using length with ideas that are not objects). In grammar, we have been working on punctuation: using periods, question marks, and exclamation points. In comprehension, we began studying informational texts. This week, we focused on an article called, "How Are Animals Like and Not Like Their Parents?". We were able to study important vocabulary from the article and use a brace map to find out the main idea of the text by investigating important details. The PBIS Social Skill of the week is how to deal with frustration. We must identify feelings of frustrations as they arise, determine the source of these feelings, breathe deeply and relax when frustrations arise, discuss frustrations with a caring adult or peer, and find alternative activities that promote feelings of success. The students know this process as the steps to problem solving: 1)Think about it. 2) Choose a plan. 3) Carry out your plan. 4) Check your answer. Lastly, this is a reminder that there will be no school for students on Monday and Tuesday due to teacher inservice work days. There will also not be a homework packet due next week because of the short week. Instead, letters will be sent home about DreamBox and Lexia to give students the opportunity to practice their computer programs at home. Keep reading and enjoy the time with family!
