Week of September 5th:
I hope everyone had a wonderful day off for Labor Day! Our PBIS social skill this week was following instructions/directions. We learned that when you are asked to follow instructions, you look at the person talking, say "okay", do what you've been asked right away, and check back with the person who asked you. In Language Arts this week we worked on comprehension, grammar, and writing. In comprehension, we studied the story Hansel and Gretel by picking out important vocabulary words, completing a character, setting, and major events chart, and creating character and setting bubble maps. In grammar, we have been working on common nouns and understand that nouns can be a person, place, or thing. We got to practice classifying different nouns into the appropriate categories. In writing, we worked on opinion writing. After reading The Three Little Pigs last week, we answered the question: which pig was the wisest? We had to provide evidence to support our opinion. In math, we worked on our new unit, which is all about using data to add and subtract to 20. We specifically organized, collected, and represented different data. For example, today we used the topic of our favorite pets to create and interpret a visual representation of which students in room 5 like better: cats or dogs. Tomorrow we will have volunteers from Desert Springs Middle School come work with our 1st graders for 1 hour in the afternoon!
